What Happens During a BWRT® Session?
If you’re considering BWRT® for the first time, it’s natural to wonder what actually happens during a session.
You may also be wondering whether you’ll have to talk about difficult experiences in detail, whether you’ll remain conscious throughout the process, or what you’ll be expected to do during the session.
Here’s what you can expect when exploring BWRT® with Mindfuel.
What happens during a BWRT® session?
A BWRT® session begins by establishing what you’d like to change and understanding how the issue currently affects you.
Rather than needing to explain every detail of your past, the focus can be on how you feel now and how you’d prefer to feel instead.
Your practitioner then guides you through a structured BWRT® process designed around the particular response you’re looking to change.
BWRT® is carried out while you remain conscious and aware. It doesn’t involve being put into a hypnotic or unconscious state.

Do I have to talk about my past?
Not necessarily.
One of the features of BWRT® is that you can maintain what the BWRT Institute describes as a “core of privacy”. You don’t necessarily need to disclose personal information or go through a difficult experience in detail.
Your practitioner still needs enough information to understand what you’re experiencing and work safely with you, but you can discuss what you’re comfortable sharing.

For someone who has avoided therapy because they don’t want to repeatedly talk about something painful, this can be an important consideration.
Are you awake during BWRT®?
Yes.
BWRT® is performed in a fully conscious state. You remain aware of what is happening throughout the session and participate in the process with guidance from your practitioner.
It is not hypnosis, and you aren’t required to enter a trance-like state.

What might I work on during a session?
BWRT® Level 1 is used by trained practitioners for a range of unwanted emotional responses, including anxiety, fears and phobias, panic-related responses, performance anxiety and other difficulties.

At Mindfuel, this could mean working around an issue such as:
A particular fear or phobia
Anxiety in certain situations
Panic or an automatic fear response
Confidence or performance difficulties
A difficult memory
A reaction that feels out of proportion to what you know logically
The exact focus depends on what you’re experiencing and what you want to change.
What does BWRT® feel like?
There isn’t one universal experience of a BWRT® session.
You remain conscious and are guided through the process by your practitioner. Some people may find the process straightforward and focused, while others may notice different thoughts, feelings or physical sensations as they work through it.
Your practitioner can explain what you’ll be doing before you begin, so you know what to expect.
How long does a BWRT® session take?
The length of a session can vary depending on the practitioner, the issue being addressed and the approach being used.
BWRT® is generally described by the BWRT Institute as a brief therapeutic approach, although this shouldn’t be taken to mean that everyone will need the same number or length of sessions.

At Mindfuel, you’ll be able to discuss your circumstances and what you’re hoping to achieve before deciding how to proceed.
How many BWRT® sessions will I need?
There isn’t a guaranteed number of sessions.
The BWRT Institute describes some Level 1 issues as potentially being addressed in one or two sessions, but individual circumstances vary.
Source: https://www.bwrt.org/folders/What-is
The number of sessions you may need depends on the nature of the issue, how long you’ve experienced it and what you’re hoping to change.
What’s the difference between BWRT® Level 1 and Level 2?
Mindfuel offers both Level 1 and Level 2 BWRT®, allowing the approach to be considered according to the type and complexity of the issue you’re experiencing.
Level 1 focuses on unwanted emotional responses, including areas such as anxiety, fears, phobias and performance-related difficulties.
Level 2 is intended for more deeply established patterns and issues involving areas such as identity, self-esteem and certain compulsive or dependency-related behaviours.

You don’t need to work this out yourself. During your initial conversation, your practitioner can discuss what you’re experiencing and whether BWRT® is appropriate.
Is BWRT® suitable for everyone?
No single therapeutic approach is appropriate for everyone.
If you’re considering BWRT®, it’s worth discussing your circumstances with a suitably trained practitioner before starting. They can help you understand what the approach involves and whether it is appropriate for the issue you want to address.
If you’re experiencing significant anxiety, panic or another mental health difficulty, you can also speak with your GP or access NHS Talking Therapies in England.
What should I expect from Mindfuel?
At Mindfuel, the focus is on providing a confidential and supportive environment where you can discuss what you’re experiencing without feeling pressured to share more than you’re comfortable with.
The first step is simply understanding what you’d like to change and considering whether BWRT® is the right approach for you.
